Renewals and Replacements
The law requires renewing your driver license by midnight of your birthday. However, you can renew up to 18 months prior to the expiration date. The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles may mail a complimentary reminder notice 45-60 days in advance of your expiration date. You may renew your driver license at one of our seven service centers that offer driver license services.
Driver licenses are valid for six to eight years depending on your age and REAL ID status*.
- For people age 79 and under, driver licenses are valid for eight years.
- For people 80 and above, driver licenses are available for six years.
Deadlines are coming up, so make sure you’re REAL ID’d.
*Beginning 2014, federal agencies will no longer accept a driver license or ID card unless it is REAL ID compliant. This means in order to board commercial flights or enter federal facilities you must have a REAL ID issued driver license. Your current Florida license or ID card will continue to be valid as identification for federal purposes until: October 1, 2020
